Storm End Season in South Carolina at Ripken's Big Kahuna Tournament
The Plainfield Storm wrapped up the 2007 season competing in a week-long tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Ripken Experience. In preliminary pool play, the Storm finished 3-2 earning a #2 seed defeating Maryland's Team Savage, Georgia's Powder Springs Indians, and Ohio's Dublin Green Sox while falling to the Arizona Titans and the Jersey Shore Devil Rays. In the quarterfinal round, the Storm were eliminated by the New Jersey Nationals.
Prior to the start of the tournament, the Storm, along with all the 14-year old teams, competed in three Skills Competition - the Home Run Derby, the Accuracy Competition and the Turn Two Doubleplay event. The Storm earned first place honors winning the Turn Two Doubleplay Event with a score of 29.66 seconds by turning four double plays in the fastest time. Turning the double plays for the Storm were Kyle Cunningham, Evan Whaley, Bobby Tenczar, Connor Bonam, Eric Eller, and Joey Pendolino.
The Storm finished the season with an overall record 40-18. In addition to competing at the Ripken Experience, highlights for the season included winning the Lombard Wood Bat Tournament, placing third place at the Joey Kledzik Memorial Day Tournament, second place at the North Aurora Baseball Tournament, second place at the Yorkville Wood bat Tournament and finishing first in the Kane County Baseball League regular season with a 14-2 record.
Plainfield Storm Capture Lombard Wood Bat Tournament Title
The Plainfield Storm captured first place in the Lombard July Wood Bat Summer Slam held last weekend. The Storm went 5-0 in the tournament and beat the Homer Heat 12-2 in the championship game to capture the title. The Storm dominated the tournament from beginning to end earning the title with solid pitching and outstanding defense. Here are some impressive team numbers from the tournament: - The Storm gave up only four runs during the entire tournament (five games), while scoring 37. - The Storm gave up only nine singles during the entire tournament (covering 34 innings), while collecting 31 of their own. - The Storm's pitchers had a combined ERA of 0.41. - The Storm had two no-hitters. - The Storm allowed only three stolen bases, while collecting 19. In the opening game, the Storm beat Roselle Renegades 10-0 with three pitchers combining on a no-hitter. Jake Ready, Bobby Tenczar and Joe Ridder combined for seven innings of no-hit ball striking 11 and walking just three. On the offensive side, the Storm's Joe Ridder had two hits and four runs batted in to lead the way. Also contributing offensively were Eric Eller (two hits and one run scored), Tenczar (one hit, one run scored and two RBI), and Conor Philbin (one hit, two runs scored and one RBI). Also adding RBI were Joey Pendolino and Joe Simonelli while Kyle Cunningham, Evan Whaley and Jake Ready each added a hit and two runs scored apiece. In game two, the Storm defeated the Glen Ellyn Rangers 7-1 behind the pitching of Joe Wedra who pitched six innings on one-run ball, striking four Ranger batters. The Storm held a 3-0 lead going into the fifth inning when they exploded for four runs, three coming on a bases loaded double by Philbin. Adding RBI's for the Storm were Pendolino, Ready, Cunningham and Brent Minta. In their third game, the Storm battled the Lombard Lightning defeating the host team 5-0 behind the solid pitching of Eller, who pitched a complete game three-hit masterpiece. The Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back as Eller limited the Lightning to three singles over seven innings, while striking out four. Providing the offense for the Storm was Cunningham who had two of the five RBI. After going 3-0 in pool play, the Storm advanced to the Championship round where they took on the Orland Park Magic in a semi-final contest. The Storm's Jake Ready pitched a complete game no-hitter in leading the Storm to a 3-1 victory. Only an unearned run in the seventh inning prevented Ready from the shutout. Nonetheless, Ready struck out seven Magic hitters over the course of seven innings. For the tournament, Ready pitched 10 innings allowing no hits while striking out 13 hitters. Ready also led the offensive attack as he collected two hits and one run. The big blow came off the bat of Ridder who singled in the fifth inning to give the Storm a 2-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the sixth and that was enough as Ready dominated Magic hitters. In the Championship game, it was Joe Wedra pitching the complete game as the Storm beat the Homer Heat 12-2 in six innings to earn first place. Wedra limited the Heat to five hits and two runs over six innings to earn the victory. The Storm broke open a 2-0 game in the fourth inning with a four-run outburst to increase their lead to 6-0 and added six runs in the sixth to seal the victory. Collecting two hits each were Whaley and Philbin, while Pendolino added one hit, one RBI, and three runs scored and Minta added one hit, two runs scored and two RBI. Eller, Ready, Ridder, and Cunningham all added a hit and RBI each. For the season, the Storm have played in five tournaments, earning one first place, two second place, and one third place finish. Their overall record stands at 34-10.
Storm take Second Place in North Aurora Baseball Association Tournament
The Plainfield Storm finished the North Aurora Tournament this past weekend with a 4-1 record earning second place in the 12-team field. In the preliminary pool play competition, the Storm went 3-0 defeating the Lisle Wolves (15-3), North Aurora Stars (7-1), and the Kaneland Knights (7-6) to earn the number one seed entering Sunday's championship round. In the opener against Lisle, the Storm jumped out an 11-0 lead after the second inning behind the bats of Eric Eller (single, double, four RBI), Joey Pendolino (double, two RBI), Joe Ridder (single, two runs scored, two RBI), Bobby Tenczar (single, run scored, two RBI) and Evan Whaley (double, two runs scored, one RBI). In their second victory over North Aurora, the Storm were led by Joe Wedra (winning pitcher) and Brent Minta (save) who combined to pitch seven innings on two hit baseball. Wedra and Minta limited the Stars to just two singles and one run while striking out seven. Eller again was the offensive star as he led the way with a single, double and four RBI. Also providing offensive punch was Whaley who singled doubled and had two runs scored. View the boxscore.
In the final victory against the Knights of Kaneland, the Storm down 4-1 in the fifth inning when they exploded for six runs to take the lead 7-4. Minta led the way for the Storm with three hits (two singles, one double, one run scored and one RBI), while Pendolino added two RBI, Bonam tripled and had two RBI, and Whaley reached base four times in the game with three walks, a single and two runs scored. In the Championship round and in the fourth game of the tournament, the Storm rallied to defeat the Elgin Rippers 7-6 in eight innings to advance to championship game. The Storm again trailed late 6-2 in the sixth inning when they rallied for four runs to tie the game at six. In the four-run rally, Whaley and Bonam each had two hits and two runs batted in to force the tie. Two innings later in the bottom of the eighth, Whaley came through again with the game-winning single to right center driving in Joe Simonelli who had just stolen second base. Earning the victory on the mound was Wedra who came in relief to pitch the final 1-1/3 innings striking out two of the four hitters he faced. View the boxscore.
In the championship game, the Storm took on the Wheaton Warriors. Again, trailing 6-0 in the fourth inning, the Storm scored four runs on four hits to close the gap to 6-4. After Simonelli and Whaley had walked, Bonam, Conor Philbin, Eller and Pendolino all had hits to ignite the rally. In the fifth inning, with the Storm trailing 7-4, the Storm scored twice more to cut the lead to 7-6. In the rally, Kyle Cunningham and Tenczar had hits and Simonelli had a sacrifice to get the Storm close. But the Warriors scored five times in the sixth inning to put the game away. For the tournament, Whaley hit over .500; Eric Eller hit .480 and had 10 RBI; Wedra had three wins and Jake Ready had one win and a save.
The Storm’s overall record improved to 19-8. The Storm continue Kane County Conference play on Tuesday (Geneva Vikings) and Wednesday (Yorkville Reds) before playing in a Father’s Day wood bat tournament. Storm Improve to 10-1 in Conference Play The Plainfield Storm improved their Kane County conference record to 10-1 and their overall record to 15-7 with a solid 7-1 victory over the Yorkville Foxes. The Storm wrapped out 10 hits, scored seven runs, limited the Foxes to three hits, and committed no errors in route to the victory. On the mound, Brent Minta, Bobby Tenczar and Kyle Cunningham combined to carry a no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Foxes scratched out a couple of hits and a run. Combined, Minta (winning pitcher), Tenczar and Cunningham struck out nine hitters while walking just one batter. Offensively, the way was paced by Minta and Conor Philbin who had two hits apiece. The Storm's Jake Ready, Joey Pendolino and Evan Whaley also added RBI's and Bobby Tenczar hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning to cement the victory. Plainfield Storm Capture Third Place at Kledzik Memorial Tournament
The Plainfield Storm captured third place this past weekend at the 10th Annual Joey Kledzik Memorial Day Tournament, held in Plainfield, Illinois. The Storm opened the tournament with a 6-5 win over the Fighting Celtics from New Lenox. The Storm trailed 3-2 in the fourth inning when the Storm's Conor Philbin doubled and scored on an RBI groundout from Eric Eller. With the score tied, Joey Pendolino launched a home run to give the Storm the lead 4-3. The Storm pushed the lead to 5-3 but the Celtic battled back on tied the score 5-5 in the sixth inning. However, the Storm scored the winning run when Conor Bonam doubled to centerfield driving home Evan Whaley who led off the inning with a walk. In addition to driving home the winning run, Conor Bonam earned the victory on the mound pitching a complete game, allowing just eight hits while striking out nine Celtics.
In their second round game against St. Joe's of Joliet, the Storm defeated St. Joe's riding the back of pitcher Jake Ready. Ready pitched a complete game masterpiece. Jake struck 10 batters and limited St. Joes to two hits over the first five inning. With the score 1-0 in favor of the Storm going into the sixth and final inning, the Storm pounded out five hits and seven runs to break the game open. A small rally by St. Joe's in the sixth inning prevented Ready from a complete game shutout. Leading the way for the offensive in that last inning was Joe Simonelli, Conor Bonam, Conor Philbin, and Joe Ridder who all had hits to drive in runs to seal the victory.
The Storm moved on to the championship round were they were defeated by eventual champs Wiers Warriors 16-6. For the Storm, Joe Wedra homered and Conor Philbin had a bases loaded triple to provide the offensive for the Storm. Unfortunately, Wiers had too much firepower and the Storm were defeated soundly. The Storm also dropped their next contest to St. Joe's 12-2 in a rematch from their previous contest. St. Joe's came out strong and dominated the Storm scoring in each of the first four innings. The only offensive highlight for the Storm was a Joe Ridder two-run home run in the first inning. It was Ridder's fifth home run of the season.

Baseball League conference record to 9-1 with two
impressive victories this week. On Tuesday (5/22), the
Storm defeated the Yorkville Reds 10-0 behind the bat of
Conor Philbin. Philbin led the Storm's hit attack with
two hits, including a triple, two runs scored and one run
batted in. Also contributing multiple RBI were Conor
Bonam, Joey Pendolino and Eric Eller. On the mound,
Eller, Brent Minta, and Kyle Cunningham limited the Reds
to just two hits over five innings while striking out
six. The Storm jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings
and cruised to victory.
On Thursday (5/22), the
Storm battled the previous unbeaten Elburn Express who
came into the game with a perfect 10-0 conference mark.
The Storm entered the contest with their own impressive
8-1 mark. In an entertaining, well-played game, the Storm
used seven first inning runs to propel themselves to an
11-9 victory giving Elburn their first loss in conference
play. With the victory, the Storm improved their
conference record to 9-1. There were many offensive stars
for the Storm. Leading the way were Joe Wedra, who
homered, had two runs scored and three RBI. Also
contributing at the dish were Kyle Cunningham (triple,
single, one run scored and two RBI), Joe Ridder (triple),
Conor Bonam (two hits and two runs scored), Jake Ready
(double and a run scored) and Eric Eller, who continued to
be an offensive force as he went three for three with a
run scored and one RBI. On the mound, Conor Philbin
earned the victory with Joe Wedra pitching a solid middle
relief. Earning the save was Joey Pendolino who pitched
two scoreless innings in which he struck out four Express
hitters.
The Storm gear up for
the Kledzik Memorial Tournament this weekend. All games
will be played at Renwick Park in Plainfield.
Storm Cruise Past Bulldogs Earning their seventh win in eight conference games, the Storm cruised past the cross-town rival Plainfield Bulldogs 10-2 on Thursday night at Four Seasons Park in Plainfield. Leading the way for the Storm was Conor Bonam who pitched four innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory. Bonam also went three for three at the plate and scored two runs. The Storm's Jake Ready also contributed to the victory as he pitched the final three innings allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out a pair. Ready also had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. The Storm pounded out 13 hits in the contest with Kyle Cunningham (two hits, one run scored and one RBI), Joey Pendolino (one hit and two RBI), Conor Philbin (one hit, one run scored and one RBI) and Brent Minta (two RBI) leading the way. Chipping in one hit each and a run scored were Evan Whaley, Joe Wedra, Eric Eller and Bobby Tenczar. The boxscore can be viewed here. The Storm's overall mark stands at 10-5. The Storm host the Yorkville Reds on Tuesday, May 22 before traveling to Elburn to take on the Express on Thursday, May 24. Storm Finish First Month of the Season After 14 games, the Plainfield Storm have an overall record of 9-5 and a Kane County Conference League record of 6-1. The Storm will play nine more conference games as they look to advance to the Gold League Playoffs (teams advance to the Gold Playoffs by finishing first or second in their respective division). This week sees the Storm playing two more conference games as they take on the Oswego Panthers on Tuesday and they renew their rivalry with the cross-town Plainfield Bulldogs on Thursday. The Storm are also gearing up for their next tournament which is the 10th Annual Joey Kledzik Memorial Tournament scheduled for May 25-28. The Storm look to improve on their third place finish last year.
Storm Bats Stay Hot The Plainfield Storm improved their overall record to 6-0 and their conference record to 4-0 with two impressive back-to-back wins on Saturday (4/28) and Sunday (4/29) over the Yorkville Foxes and the Batavia Bulldogs. On Saturday, the Storm defeated the Foxes 27-6 behind a 20-hit attack led by Joe Ridder's third home run of the season. Ridder finished the day with three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Conor Bonam also had a big day at the plate with three hits, four runs scored and four runs batted in. Contributing two hits each on the day were Evan Whaley (three runs scored / three RBI), Joey Pendolino (one run scored / three RBI), Conor Philbin (two runs scored / 2 RBI), Joe Wedra (three runs scored / three RBI), Kyle Cunningham (three runs scored / two RBI), and Brent Minta (two runs scored / one RBI). Earning the victory for the Storm was Conor Bonam who combined with Eric Eller and Bobby Tenczar held the Foxes in check. To view the boxscore click here. On Sunday, the Storm faced the Batavia Bulldogs in a matchup of unbeaten conference teams (Storm 3-0 / Batavia 4-0). The Storm used an 18-hit attack and spotless defense (no errors) to defeat the Bulldogs 22-2 to stay unbeaten. Leading the way with three hits apiece were Evan Whaley (three runs scored / three RBI) and Joe Simonelli (one run scored / four RBI). Also contributing at the plate were Kyle Cunningham who chipped in a double, a triple, four runs scored and an RBI. Conor Philbin added a double, home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Adding two hits each in the victory were Eric Eller (two runs scored / one RBI) and Joey Pendolino (three runs scored / one RBI). Every Storm player got at least one hit in the attack as the Storm improved to 4-0 in Kane County Conference play. Earning the victory on the mound was Conor Philbin who improved to 2-0 on the young season. Philbin, Wedra, Cunningham and Joe Ridder limited the Bulldogs to four hits over five innings. The Storm will participate in their first tournament of the year this weekend as the play in the Homer Early Spring Tournament.
Plainfield Storm Stay Perfect on Young Season The Plainfield Storm improved its overall mark to 4-0 and their conference mark to 2-0 with a 8-4 victory over the Kaneland Knights on Saturday. The Storm jumped out to a 6-0 lead and used the combined pitching efforts of Conor Philbin (W, 1-0), Joe Wedra and Brent Minta to hold the knights to seven singles over seven innings. Offensively, Connor Bonam led the way for the Storm with two hits and three runs batted in. Joe Wedra and Jake Ready pitched in with one hit each and two runs scored while Bobby Tenczar also added two runs batted in. To view the boxscore click here. The Storm continue conference play on Thursday when they travel to Yorkville to take on the Yorkville Reds. They are back home on Saturday to square off against the Yorkville Foxes before concluding the week with a conference game on Sunday against Batavia Gold.
Storm Open Kane County Conference League Play with a Win The Plainfield Storm opened Kane County Conference League play on Tuesday with a solid 12-5 victory over the Plainfield Bulldogs. Storm pitchers Conor Bonam (winning pitcher, 1-0), Jake Ready and Eric Eller combined on a seven hitter in keeping the Bulldogs in check. On offense, the Storm pounded out 13 hits lead by Joe Ridder's second home run of the season. Ridder finished the game with two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Conor Philbin and Bobby Tenczar also added two hits apiece in the victory, while Kyle Cunningham and Joe Simonelli each doubled in the contest. Bonam and Evan Whaley also ignited the Storm at the top of the lineup as they combined for two hits, three runs scored, three runs batted in and three stolen bases. Plainfield Storm Open Season 2-0 The Plainfield Storm opened the season with a home and home doubleheader with the Homer Force on Saturday and Sunday. The Storm swept the two games defeating the Force 15-10 in game one on Saturday and 10-6 in game two on Sunday. In the chilly weather for the opener, the Storm lost two four run leads in the game and were tied 10-10 going into the fifth inning when the Storm's Joe Ridder launched a three-run homer over the right field fence at Four Seasons park. The three-run homer capped a five-run inning and propelled the Storm to victory. In game two on Sunday, the Storm again used a six-run fifth inning to march out to a 10-3 lead. The big blows came from the Storm's Jake Ready who had two doubles and three runs batted in in the victory. The Storm also used solid defense committing only one error in the contest. The Storm then travel to Kaneland on Saturday (April 21) for a conference game against the Knights.
